Ecuadorian Contempt in Madrid Elections
Ecuadorian immigrants in Spain wanted that the consult included a question that revolves around the issue of immigrants’ sons that are born in the European country and cannot obtain that nationality.
Art. 7.2 of the Constitution states that the sons of Ecuadorians born in a foreign country with an Ecuadorian mother or father are Ecuadorian of nationality. The Ecuadorian children born in Spain cannot earn the nationality by a bill approved in October of 2008. Juan Carlos Lucero, of the National Federation of Ecuadorians in Spain, believe that the government is wasting the opportunity to correct the mistakes made by assemblymen.
In 2010, the Madrid Consulate subscribed 4,191 children of Ecuadorians, and in 2011 this number decreased to 307.
