ELN guerrillas urges US take responsibility for Colombian conflict
The ELN, the second guerrilla Colombia and currently in exploratory peace talks with the government on Sunday called on the US to assume its responsibility in the Colombian armed conflict, spanning more than five decades.
The National Liberation Army (ELN) attributed to Washington a decisive role in the internal conflagration in Colombia, which according to official figures has left more than 220,000 dead and 5.3 million displaced.
“The war that Colombia has suffered in the last seventy years, even murder (Liberal politician) Jorge Eliecer Gaitan (in 1948), has been determined by the US guidelines. They are the Pentagon and the CIA designers War Low Intensity and state terrorism that in our country has claimed millions of victims, “said the insurgent group in a statement.
Thus, the ELN urged Washington that his role not be that of “an innocent observer, or an enlightened advisor, or a happy compositors, much less of a “fair judge”.
“It should be on the table as directly responsible for war and disaster, and must make commitments to rebuild Colombia in peace,” it said.
