First Cubans arrived in Miami after decades
Posted On 16 Jan 2013
Thanks to the new immigration law, effective on Monday, dozens of Cubans have been able to leave the island and visit their relatives in exile after decades of restrictions for leaving Cuba.
Now, a visa and a valid passport are the only legal requirements to leave the island for a maximum period of two years. However, the economic barriers are preventing mass migration as documents such as passports which cost $ 100, five times the average wage, and the various expenses, including the purchase of the plane ticket.
The government reserves the right to deny a passport for security reasons. Dissidents see them as the new filter that will prevent them from leaving Cuba.
