Fishermen and shrimp farmers wait for renewal of law
Ecuadornews:
The dialogue was attended by representatives of the tuna industry, shrimp producers, and leaders, who proposed increasing exports to generate foreign exchange. Gustavo Núñez, from the Ecuadorian Chamber of Tuna Industrialists and Processors, explained the need for a trade defense policy. “We have an intense competition, Asia. Chile and Peru are a potential market in the sight of Asian producers. This means an unfair competition because they engage in non-responsible fishing.”
The request for a new Fisheries Law was also reiterated by the attendees. Alfonso Delgado, a representative of the National Coordination of Fisheries and Allied Organizations of Ecuador, emphasized that the current Fishing Law, dating from 1974, is “killing” them. They ask for a law that guarantees access to modern technology and equal rights for all guilds. (I)
