Flu Cases fill Hospitals

Posted On 05 Jan 2011

The flu has risen in this era because of climate change. Hundreds of parents go to the hospitals with their children -who have congestion, fever, and chest pain and some of them: diarrhea and vomiting- in order to get medical attention for them.

Dozens of kids go to the children’s hospital “Ycaza Francisco Bustamante” in order to get treatment for nasopharyngitis, tonsillitis or flu.

The 60% of patients in the hospital present these diseases. Last Monday, in the respiratory therapy area 140 patients were treated, when the regular amount is 80 in one day, the asthmatic area also increased from 20 to 32 patients.

For the pediatrician Arana the increase of these respiratory processes with fever, sore throat, hoarseness, and general malaise has a direct relation with the environment, the temperature change, and the burning of “viejos”.

“This year it has been an increase of cases. The virus is more aggressive, the fever is higher now,” said Arana, who also believes that poor nutrition also affects in the recovery of these cases.

One of the recommendations given by Arana is not to wrap the children. It is better to dress them with light clothes because when they keep warm the temperature rises too much, which causes that the virus develop rapidly through the air route, which is the via of quicker transmission.

The pulmonologist at this hospital, Luis Tapia, said that the pneumonia is the most common respiratory disease in children under 5 years old.

Patients with chronic diseases such as cystic fibrosis, diabetes, and heart disease should not go to public spaces because they are more susceptible to acquire the virus, recommended Tapia.
