For President Giammattei, Vargas wanted to “embroble the Guatemalans”
The President of the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (Conaie), Jaime Vargas, along with the militants María Luisa Lozano and Apawki Castro, justified his presence in Guatemala before the police, declaring himself to be a maximum authority in Ecuador .

In a video broadcast on social networks, Vargas reports that he and his companions were invited to an event and that when they left the central market in Guatemala , the uniformed people asked for the corresponding documents to verify their identity.
As Vargas did not deliver them, he told police that his documents were about three or four blocks from where he was.
“I think that the national police do not have that capacity to guarantee the rights of our citizens, especially, we are not any Ecuadorian or migrant citizen , ” he says.
And he continues: “We are authority . I am President of the Indigenous Movement of Ecuador, there we say the Second President of the country, of the indigenous peoples and that is why we reject… That means that they saw us with the face of suspects or like any other person ”.
For its part, the Conaie issued a statement, in which he explained why the presence of Vargas and his entourage in Guatemalan territory.

After the publication of the video, Vargas received messages for and against social networks. Among the support is the message of support from Conaie.
For his part, Congressman Alfonso Harb, said that “I did not believe so much when I was president of Barcelona.”

Expulsion by the Guatemalan government
After the incident, Alejandro Giammattei, president of Guatemala, announced the arrest and expulsion of the Central American country of Vargas, Lozano and Apawki Castro.
Giammattei warned that foreigners were meddling in internal affairs in the country. “We are not going to allow any foreign person to come here to alleviate the spirits of our people. They (members of the Conaie) were wanted in their country. The Ecuadorian authorities asked us to return them last night and we proceeded to do so, ”said the President.
In addition, Conaie members did not have a visa and, therefore, were not legal in the country. According to Giammattei, the mission of Ecuadorians was to “insult the Guatemalans and put them against each other. We want peace in Guatemala, ”he rejected.

Given this serious fault, migration and the Guatemalan National Civil Police tracked and detained them in the Central Market in Zone 1 to expel them from the country.
According to members of the Conaie, they attended the Central American country to participate in an assembly with the Waqib Kej Convergencia, with representatives from Honduras, Mexico, Bolivia, Guatemala, Argentina, “to address the situation of native peoples,” they explained.
