IMF: “Myopic policies must be avoided”

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) yesterday urged G20 leaders to avoid “myopic” nationalistic policies and to work together to resolve their economic and trade differences at the group’s meeting this week.

In a message before the Friday and Saturday meeting to be held in Hamburg (the first for US President Donald Trump), the IMF said in a note to the leaders of the bloc that an open and regulated trading system is needed to have a global stable economy.

The IMF call to keep the multilateral cooperation comes at a time when the Trump administration is considering imposing new tariffs or quotas on steel imports based on national security issues, something that has not happened since the creation of the World Trade Organization in 1995. (I)
