The crisis in the construction sector is reflected, among other things, in the slump of imports of transportation equipments and materials during the first quarter of this year compared to the same period of 2015. The import of building materials fell by 46, 7% in that period, according to the latest report of the Central Bank of Ecuador (BCE).
Silverio Duran, president of the Chamber of Construction Industries (Camicon) explained that the establishment of safeguards for 2961 items, last year, forced companies to stop importing certain inputs, especially for luxury finishes, a cathegory that suffered a decrease in sales because the demand dropped in the country.
Among the items whose purchase decreased are faucets, ceramics and porcelain, including those from countries of the European Union (EU).
