Jaime Nebot ensures that people should decide for constitutional reforms
The Mayor of Guayaquil, Jaime Nebot, said yesterday that “is the people” who should change the Constitution, because they approved it in 2008 through a popular consultation. This, in reference to constitutional reforms that the Government proposed to the Constitutional Court, which are under verification.
Nebot, who disagreed with indefinite reelection, said through a radio address they are not only trying to remove the citizen the right to be consulted, but they actively intervene and decide to change a constitution.
“Here, in the background, there is a clear message, the people made and voted the Constitution, the people must change the Constitution. The Government is so in agreement with that, so in 2011 that’s what they did. Today, for obvious reasons, perhaps related to February 23, they want to change the process,” he said.
