Jaime Nebot, “I will not be a candidate”

Posted On 29 May 2014

Last Wednesday during his regular weekly radio address, the newly sworn in Mayor of Guayaquil, Jaime Nebot (PSC-MG), said that if the Constitution is amended in the issue of reelection for public offices, either via amendment or by a reform, he will not be a candidate for reelection in 2019.

Also Nebot, who clarified that also he will not be a candidate for President in 2017, said he is against the possibility of enabling the indefinite reelection. However, he said that the way to do this would be a constitutional amendment, ie, through a referendum.

“Whoever wants that (reelection) has to follow what the Constitution says, which is also what they passed: the reform arises, goes to the Assembly and surely passes by majority and then goes to the referendum. There is a proper procedure to comply, not to violate it.”
