Legality of the public debt will be analyzed by the National Audit Office

On July 31, the National Audit Office (Contraloría General del Estado for its Spanish name) held a special review of Ecuador’s external and internal public debt. According to the document, the review will analyze the legality, sources, and uses of domestic and foreign public debt from January 1, 2012, to May 24, 2017.
The document, signed by acting Comptroller General Pablo Celi, considers it is “imperative” to review the legality of domestic and foreign public debt after the speech of President Lenin Moreno on July 28 in the framework of the presentation of the budget proforma. In his speech, Moreno said that “as of May this year, the country’s public debt, which includes local governments, reached an aggregate amount of $ 41.893 billion.” (I)
