Mining tragedy in Ponce Enriquez

Seven dead and at least 15 injured is the result of a landslide that occurred today on the mining camp “Pueblo Nuevo” in the city Ponce Enriquez, Azuay Province, south of the country. However, the number of victims could change since there’s there no official statement about it and there are reports that the number of victims is higher.

According to news reports gathered by the television, the landslide was the result of the heavy rain about the site fell during the yesterday’s evening and early today, producing also destroying three houses and the cut of the electrical service.

The rescue of casualties was made with the help of a helicopter; since the vehicle access to this rich gold zone is very difficult, despite several miners operate there.
