Moreno: “75% of Ecuadorians stay at home, but we need more”
Nationally, the President of the Republic, Lenín Moreno, referred to the different financing that the government has obtained to cope with the health emergency caused by the coronavirus (covid-19).
“The Minister of Economy (Richard Martínez) postponed the payment of interest on foreign debt for $ 200 million and paid about $ 320 million of the 20-20 bonds, contracted by the previous government. We are going to invest the unpaid interest money in the health emergency. We started by paying $ 50 million to more than 1,500 healthcare providers. This allows us to access new resources and in the next few days $ 2,500 will arrive in Ecuador, ”he said.
In addition, the President indicated that “as a country we generate trust and that is why we have already received the support of the International Monetary Fund. Its director, Kristalina Georgieva, confirmed the financial support through the rapid financing instrument, $ 500 million will come to the country to attend to the health emergency. ”
Moreno also highlighted that the Government was able to reallocate a $ 250 million loan from the IDB (Inter-American Development Bank), which was destined for electrical interconnection works between Ecuador and Peru. “Today we are going to use that money to face the health emergency we are going through.”
On how the emergency is carried out in the country, the President indicated that “we have managed to get 75% of Ecuadorians to stay at home, but we need more, we need much more, more support, more discipline, maximum collective awareness, that is why we expanded the curfew from 14:00 until 05:00 ″.
To appease the situation, Moreno ordered that fines be applied to violators. “More than 1,000 offenders in a state of emergency … what indolence for his family, for the neighbors, for everyone.” (I)
