Moreno admits that he admired Correa, but rejects indefinite reelection
Ecuadornews:
The president of Ecuador, Lenin Moreno, said today he does not regret having admired his predecessor Rafael Correa in the past, but added that he rejects the idea of perpetuating himself in power.
Moreno participated on Tuesday in a gallery organized by the agency EFE and Casa de América at the headquarters of this institution in Madrid where he reviewed several current issues in his country. Asked by Correa, whose vice president he is and is now distanced, Lenin Moreno resorted to irony. “Correa’s criteria on me now is not very good. I always had good one from him. It is possible that we are both wrong. ”
In his first stage in the presidency Correa was “a dreamer”, according to Moreno, for whom the situation “becomes sinister when a president decides to perpetuate himself in power.”
“The power is dangerous,” said the Ecuadorian president, who called Correa the first stage of “young idealist”, before adding that he does not like that a dictatorship can disguise itself as democracy. In reference to the management of Correa in its last stage, Moreno said that “we are paying very dearly for corruption cases”.
“What is loved is not stolen,” said Moreno, who replaced Correa as president of Ecuador last May. On February 4, Ecuador will hold a popular referendum that, among other issues, will allow citizens to pronounce themselves on the possibility of ending indefinite reelection. Moreno advocates ending this possibility but today he admitted that he will respect what the people decide. “If we do not win, it is respected,” said the president, who criticized Rafael Correa for having gone to the OAS to present his complaints, when in the past he had said that the Organization was “the worst thing that could happen to America.” (I)
