Nelson Mandela is Honored in South Africa

Nelson Mandela turns 94
This Wednesday a divided nation came together to honor Nelson Mandela, the deeply loved statesman who helped bring freedom to South Africa.
The good deeds made on Mandela’s 94th birthday ranged from constructing houses to performing free eye cataract surgeries. Education officials informed that nearly 12 million children sang his “Happy Birthday” as a chorus in schools from all the schools of the nation.
Millions of South Africans joined to the celebration, in their homes, offices, buses, train stations and Mandela Square. Communities in South Africa dedicate 67 minutes of the day to volunteer work and projects for those in need, one minute to mark each of Mandela’s 67 years in public service.
US President, Barack Obama, said “Mandela has changed the arc of history, transforming his country, the continent and the world.” (AV)
