New Year Festivities in Philippines Left Hundreds of Wounded

Despite the campaign made by the Philippines government against celebrating dangerously the New Year, the authorities informed that 472 people were injured due to fireworks and gunshots. Several flights had to be cancelled or diverted since the sky was heavily polluted by the fireworks explosions in the airport of Manila.
Enrique Ona, the Health Secretary informed that 454 people were injured by firework explosions, 18 by lost bullets and one person died by a lost bullet. The fireworks started three fires that burned several houses in the capital.
Many people in the Philippines are influenced by the Chinese tradition and they believe that loud celebrations in the New Year scare the demons and misfortune. (AV)
