Nicaragua Authorities work to free 24 miners trapped in mine
24 artisanal miners were trapped in a mine in the town of Bonanza, in the North Atlantic Autonomous Region (NAAR) of Nicaragua, after the collapse of a hill, informed today the authorities.
The 24 workers were trapped since Thursday, along with two others who managed to escape, said Gregorio Rocha, spokeswoman of the HEMCO mining company that operates in the place.
Rocha said that weather conditions favor the rescue and it will be supported by a brigade that moved from Managua to the area with dogs trained in search and rescue.
For its part, the Chamber of Mines of Nicaragua regretted in a statement: “the terrible undergrounding of 26 artisanal miners”, including the two who made it out.
“We express our solidarity with these artisanal miners, their families and Bonanza. Begging God that all our brothers who suffered this terrible accident come out alive,” the Chamber of Mines said.
