Possible IACHR visit to Ecuador is conditioned by Correa
Posted On 30 Mar 2014
President Rafael Correa yesterday conditioned an eventual visit of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights to know the situation of freedom of expression in Ecuador.
“If any commissioner comes as a tourist, welcome, but if comes to inspect us is also welcome, but with one condition, to first ratify the San José Pact, so it could have some legitimacy in order to come to inspect us,” said the head of state during his weekly adress.
Correa added that the Commission has become a “farce” and accused them of being responsible for the destruction of the American system of human rights.
He also said that the region needs to create similar organizations like the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) and the Community of Latin American (CELAC).
