Product labeling information will be checked under the INEN rules
From October 15 will in Ecuador start the labeling control in 40 product categories and will end on December 5, indicated Agustín Ortíz, Director of the Ecuadorian Service of Normalization (INEN) .To this, 20,000 monitorings will be conducted in 18 provinces, whereupon 90% of marketed products, both imported and domestic is encompassed.
Ortí stated that in this labeling review textiles, footwear, refrigerators, cookers, televisions, cleaning care products, among others will be comprised.
Director of INEN said that the second step will be fulfilled in 2015, where laboratory tests will be made: “These tests will allow to check that the information on the label is real. For example, if I check a garment in which it says it´s made of 50% cotton and 50% polyester, this will be analyzed and tested,” he said.
Ortiz mentioned that parallel to checking the product labeling “the net content of the articles will be verified, ie, it will be analyzed that the product meets with the weights and specific measures stated in the label, with the purpose that the consumer is not cheated.”
He recalled that the penalties for not complying are a call for attention, a fine and even the closure of the factories.
