Ricardo Patiño: “It makes no Sense” to Request an International Arbitration
Posted On 22 Sep 2011
Ecuador’s foreign minister, Ricardo Patiño said “it makes no sense” the approach for an international arbitration conducted by El Universo Newspaper in the lawsuit filed by President Rafael Correa against this media, after being sentenced to 3 years in prison and a $ 40 million payment.
I think this makes no sense. It is like if there is a law in Ecuador and a citizen commits a murder and the judges take him to jail for it and he will say, ‘No, I want an international arbitration.’ (…) Why an international arbitration if that is a crime and we have an Ecuadorian legislation for it,” said Patiño, who spoke on personal title and not on behalf of President Correa.
