Rice Research Center to produce improved varieties
Ecuadornews:
In an area of 2,500 square meters in Samborondón (Guayas), the first Rice Research and Technology Transfer Center is built by the Municipal Government and the National Corporation of Rice Producers. $ 280,000 were invested in the work, of which 20% is financed by the association. It will be ready in November.
President of the Arroceros Corporation Heitel Lozano said that this project has four edges: to produce new high-yielding varieties; provide producers with soil analysis; controlling climate behavior and get new seeds through biotechnology. “Many believed that this project would not be a reality, but today works are advancing,” he said.
Lozano explained that one of the objectives of the Research Center would be to increase the national average productivity; i.e., from 4.8 tonnes (t) of rice per hectare to 7 t per hectare. (I)
