Rough debate on reforms to social security of the military and police forces
The abrupt session characterized by shouts marked the beginning of the debate on the reforms to Social Security laws of the Armed Forces and the National Police, promoted by President Rafael Correa, that was held yesterday at the Commission on Rights of the Workers of the Assembly.
It was attended by Defense Minister Ricardo Patino; Ministry of Security Coordination Cesar Navas; and Deputy Interior Minister Diego Fuentes, who agreed that these amendments will guarantee “equality” and sustainability in the pension system and will eliminate the “privileges” of the officers.
Patino explained, among the main points, that the new calculation to fix the pension will take into account the highest wages in the last five years of service of a military or a police officer. Service time will be also extended from 20 to 25 years; and pensions will be increased in accordance with the annual inflation.
