Russia suspends certifications of five banana exporters

The news was surprising and was known this Saturday, February 3, 2024. The Russian Government decided to suspend the certifications of five Ecuadorian banana exporters.

Russia is one of the main destinations for banana exports.

The decision is made due to an alleged systematic detection of the humpback fly, known as a carrier of cholera. For the Russian government, this alert is serious, since this pest is considered dangerous. 

The suspension of banana exports is immediate. On Friday, February 2, 2024, the Ministry of Agriculture received the communication. 

An official document indicates that certifications for Ecuadorian companies are suspended starting next Monday, February 5, 2024. 

So far it is known that the Ecuadorian authorities will meet in the coming days with delegates in Russia to solve these problems. 

There is concern in the banana sector, since in recent years Russia has become one of the main export destinations for Ecuadorian bananas.

The Ecuadorian companies that have been suspended are Agroaereo Fruit Export, Comersur, Don Carlos Fruit, Agzulasa and the El Oro Agricultural Production Association.
