Posted On 13 Aug 2019

For years, bananas have been in the first place among the traditional non-oil exports of Ecuador. But in 2017 he lost this position. Two years ago it was the first time bananas lost their leadership, but regain their position quickly. In this year, for two months in a row, shrimp has been the main export procduct in Ecuador.

In May, shrimp exports totaled 1,482.1 million dollars and in June it was 1,842 million dollars.

Meawhile, Ecuador has sold the world banana for 1,444 million dollars and in June 2019 it was 1,706.1 million dollars.

According to figures from the Central Bank of Ecuador, the reason is that the shrimp sector has increased the tons sold by 30.1%. The amount would be higher if it were not because the international price has fallen by 11.7%.

On the other hand, the banana sector has been able to increase the tons exported by only 3.1%, compared to the first half of 2018. Although the unit price rose 0.8%, this was not enough to not lose the first place.
