Spanish government will challenge token consultation of Catalonia
The Spanish government of Mariano Rajoy announced on Friday the challenge to the consultation convened by the regional government of Catalonia on November 9 as an alternative to the independence referendum, vetoed by the Constitutional Court.
“We have agreed raising a challenge to the Constitutional Court, to which we request the suspension of the proceedings of the Generalitat (Catalan government), relating to the proceedings of November 9,” said the Vice President Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría.
Rajoy´s government plans to go this Friday to court.
The action is executed after the State Council considered on Thursday that the new query has even more unconstitutional defects than the referendum, which was already suspended.
It has no “legal basis and the most basic democratic guarantees,” the Vice President said today.
The alternative consultation was announced on October 14 by the Catalan government, led by the conservative nationalist Artur Mas.
