State Legislators Against Automatic Citizenship in US
This Wednesday a group of State Legislators said that their plan to eliminate the automatic citizenship for children of undocumented immigrants does not mean the deportation of the minors.
The legislators’ objective is to have the Supreme Court of the United States study the 14th Amendment of the Constitution in order to guarantee the citizenship of such children. They want the States to approve a project that would give state citizenship to people that have the requisites for American citizenship, and that each State agreed on a treaty that defines the requisites of citizenship. Such document would require the approval of the Congress, but not the sanction of the President.
Janet Murguia, president of the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), criticized the proposal saying that it leads the country in the wrong direction. The automatic citizenship for those born on American soil is a fundamental principle of human rights. The NCLR defines itself as the biggest activist organization on behalf of the Hispanic human rights in North America.
