Syria’s UN Human Rights Envoy Defects in Geneva

Syria civil war
Today the regime of the Syrian president Bashar al-Assad received another blow when, Syria’s top representative at the UN Human Rights Council had defected because he no longer felt he could do anything to help the Syrian people.
Danny al-Baaj, became the first Syrian diplomat in Switzerland to abandon Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Meanwhile several thousands of military officers have also switched sides and joined the opposition over the past months.
Al-Baaj said he took the decision a long time ago and had been in contact with Syrian opposition group the Democratic Forum based in Paris, France. The former Syrian envoy described the Democratic Forum as one of the main opposition groups, lead by Michel Kilo, a long time opponent of the regime.
Now al-Baaj considers his next move as he speaks from Geneva, he did pointed out his opposition to outside military intervention in the conflict, but supported the role of the UN’s Supervision Mission in Syria (UNSMIS). (AV)
