The government works to stop smuggling
Ecuadornews:
The complicated situation mobilized rice producers in the main rice producing areas of Ecuador earlier this month. They took the roads as a measure of protest to demand that the official price of $ 35.50 be respected for the 200-pound sack.
According to farmers, the production costs of the sack (seeds, fertilizers, and labor) is around 30 dollars. However, the main problem that has affected them for some time is the entry of smuggled rice, especially from the border with Peru, which is sold at $ 25.
The protests brought the producers, industrialists and the main authorities of the sector to the dialogue table.
The first response actions of the authorities to curb the problems of this sector emerged from the dialogues. One of them was the willingness to buy rice at the official price to the producers, through the silos of the Public Company Storage Unit (UNA). (I)
