There are more native digital media, but its sustainability is difficult
The native digital media had no greater presence in Ecuador until 2012. Jose Rivera, in his study ‘Digital Media Map of Ecuador,’ could barely track just 34, mostly in Guayas and Pichincha.
But the last record notices an increase. 49 media are listed in the book ‘Cyberjournalism in Latin America,’ which was coordinated by Ramon Salaverria and published in January this year. To these, the recently created websited must be added. They almost equal in number the national media -tradicional- (57) registered by the Council for Regulation and Development of Information and Communication (Cordicom).
Rivera explained that their increase occurs because it is cheaper to open a digital medium. In addition, there is no need for a frequency assigned by the State or “cumbersome” procedures to open a radio or an ‘online’ TV station.
And they are almost off the radar of the Communications Law, which tomorrow will meet three years in force. The the legislation do not recognized them as media and therefore, the law do not reach them. Digital natives are those that exist solely in the digital environment.
