Thousands of Migrants Detained in the South Border of Mexico
On October 17, Mexican Government Secretary informed that during the months of January and September of 2010, Mexico apprehended around 44.978 undocumented migrants. This people are at the Tapachula Immigrant Detention Centre, located in the south border with Guatemala.
“The Tapachula migratory station holds, from January to September 30, around 44.978 foreigners.” Of them, 19.783 are from Honduras, 14.148 from Guatemala, and 6.648 from El Salvador. This number was known during a visit from Chancellors, Haroldo Rodas, Honduras, and Hugo Martinez, El Salvador.
The Guatemala Chancellor asked the Mexican authorities its cooperation to capacitate the migratory agents of his country, and to reinforce children protection programs.
Every year 500.000 foreigners migrate to Mexico without documents, mainly through the south border. Their objective is to reach the United States, according to the reports of the National Commission of Human Rights.
