Three Guayas cantons take precautions against El Niño current
The cantons Duale, Santa Lucía and Pedro Carbo, of the Guayas province, take precautions for El Niño current.
Miguel Ángel Solórzano, Mayor of Santa Lucía, is collecting information about the roads conditions and obstruction of estuaries. This will be referred to the Provincial Council and the Secretariat of Risk Management. He is also negotiating a loan with the State Bank to build four walls in different enclosures that are along the banks of the Duale river.
Solórzano also indicated that along with the Municipal Risk Management and the Department of Economic and Social Inclusion they are training schools and organizing six enclosures in management of risks against the phenomenon.
Pedro Salazar, Mayor of Duale, said his canton is prepared in the preventive aspect. Although, he points out that the shortage of canoes and boats builders could become an obstacle in the case of floods, as they would be the only means of mobilization. “There are no longer those who build canoes. It is worrying …. that issue should be stregthened.”
In the Pedro Carbo canton, as in Santa Lucia, the Municipal Risk Management and the Department of Economic and Social Inclusion are working to identify vulnerable areas and set risk plans. Ignacio Figueroa, Mayor of the canton, said he will hire machinery to clean fluvial channels.
