UN Peace Initiative Fails to Halt Violence in Syria
Posted On 22 Mar 2012
Despite the UN Security Council peace call in Syria, fierce clashes have left 26 people dead while trying to escape to Turkey. Near the town of Sermin in the northwestern province of Idlib a bus with women and children was attacked.
The escalation of violence occurred a few hours after the Security Council passed a statement urging the Syrian president Bashar al-Assad and his adversaries to “fully and immediately” implement the peace plan by joint UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan.
The statement threatened, “Further steps” if the government failed to comply with the proposal. (AV)
