2014 Sectional Elections will define 11,000 dignitaries
Within a year or less, Ecuadorians will return to the polls to elect officials for the 2014-2019 period and appoint their prefects, vice prefects, mayor, city councilors and members of Parish Councils.
“We are going to choose more than 11,000 national authorities in 2014. It is a very high figure. The process is much more complex than the present one, “says the board member of the National Electoral Council (CNE for its Spanish acronym), Magdala Villacis.

According to Villacis, the new scheme for the feedback used to choose the dignity of mayor, will be applied with similar criteria to those used in the recent voting of the provincial assembly members on the past Presidential Elections of February 17.
“We will create new electoral areas. We must establish urban and rural constituencies (at the cantons), and several variables are being taken into account, “said the board member.
Villacis also indicates that this time, variables such as population, cultural identity, geographical continuity among others, are also being considered.
But it does not specify which cantons will be split, how many mayors are going to be elected (in each canton and on a national scale) or when the new units will be set; the only thing the CNE has said is that the planning of the new process will be carried out during April.
