Nintendo Hits The Ground

Posted On 29 Oct 2010

The Japanese Company Nintendo reported on Thursday a loss of 2.01 billion yen ($24.7 million) on the period of April-September 2010.

According to Bloomberg News, the company is reporting its smallest annual profit in six years. The main reasons have to do with the slowing demand of Wii consoles and consumers holding off to buy 3-D model of Nintendo DS. Sales of DS players fell 43 percent from last year’s, selling only 6.7 million units; while the figures of Wii consoles reported a drop of 14 percent.

Back In June, Nintendo announced that the 3DS handheld will allow users to see 3-D images without the need to use special glasses. The product has three cameras and a motion sensor to create the 3-D effect.

The debut of the 3DS was pushed back until after the year-end holiday season. The official release date for Japan is Feb. 26 for 250,000 yen and the following month in the U.S. and Europe. The price for the rest of the world has not been set yet.

In order to revive earnings growth for the Wii console, Nintendo will release a “Vitality Sensor” accessory.
