A Research on FARC Funding to Correa’s Presidential Campaign Began

Posted On 18 May 2011

The Attorney General of the State initiated a relevant research which studies the alleged financial contributions by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) to the 2006 presidential campaign of the current president, Rafael Correa Delgado.

These inquiries are based on multiple media reports of Ecuador that published a document by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) on the content of the FARC computers hard disks that were found during a military incursion in Colombia in 2008.

The prosecution office ordered the execution of procedures such as receiving updates of Colonel Jorge Brito and Gustavo Larrea, former Minister of Internal and External Security.

The report shows how the bank statements obtained by Ecuadorian electoral authorities were great indicators of the FARC donations to the campaign of Rafael Correa. “(…) These suggest that $ 100,000 were given by the FARC to Jorge Brito (a close person to Correa) on Friday 13 October 2006. That money was immediately deposited in the account of the campaign,” according to the IISS.

Although the report confirms that Correa approved the receipt of such funds for his campaign, the Ecuadorian president announced to be ready to submit to a polygraph test to prove he did not receive money from the FARC.
