El Universo will continue their fight for truth

In order to demand freedom of speech hundreds of people (some of them employes of newspaper El Universo), began to protest at 15:00 (local time) outside the facilities of Diario El Universo in Guayaquil, Ecuador.

An article in the newspaper’s website explains that the protest held this afternoon is given to reject the condemnation of temporary judge Juan Paredes, who took 33 hours in office, substantiated the adjudication hearing, studied more than 5,000 pages of records, wrote 156 facet of the sentence, notified parts and retired from office.

QUOTES:

– Carlos Perez Barriga, director of Diario El Universo, “Mr. President we are free to insist, we can talk and calm the situation.” “Since we are in important positions, we have to dedicate ourselves to the fundamental problems such as poverty, health.”

– Supporters: “The Perez are not alone”, “We are not silent and we will not remain silent” and “outraged.”

– Mayor of Guayaquil, Jaime Nebot: “Freedom of expression must be defended now, before anyone else can defend the rights of citizens.”
