A Chilean Government Project Approves Homosexual Unions

Chilean President Sebastián Pinera, today signed a bill that would accept civil unions between homosexual and heterosexual couples. This initiative was among Pinera’s campaign promises.

“This project is equal for different-sex couples or same sex, since in both cases it is possible to develop love, affection and respect,” Piñera said while signing the project at the Government House, now it must be studied by the Parliament.

“When this project is approved, two people who are adults, single, not siblings or ancestors and maintain emotional life may  have recognition of their loving relationship by  a life together agreement,” Pinera said.

The government’s proposal establishes the signing of a kind of contract that regulates the heritage and legacy of all unmarried couples, including same sex. The agreement must be formalized through a public document that must be registered in the Registry. The parties have the right to a pension in case of death of one of them and be registered as burdens on health systems. A community of goods will be formed between the couple as well.
