Colpin: Investigative Journalism is in Great Peril
Investigative journalism of Latin America is in great risk, this was one of the conclusions of the Latin American Conference of the Investigative Journalism (Colpin by its Spanish acronym) 2011. For four days Guayaquil was the city that sponsored the meeting of media communicators.
The recent threats to journalists with judicial processes increased to 39 civil and criminal trials. Meanwhile Carlos Lauria, coordinator for the Americas Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) informed that this year has been the most dangerous for journalists in Latin America.
In 2011, 6 journalists have died in Mexico, 4 in Brazil, 3 in Honduras, and seven more have perished in Peru, Guatemala, Salvador, Bolivia, Colombia and Dominican Republic. Since 2007 in Ecuador 20 journalists have been trialed, three are in prison and one is exiled to avoid imprisonment. (AV)
