NATO helicopter attacks Pakistani checkpoint

On November 26, 2011; several NATO helicopters opened fire on a Pakistani checkpoint, the attack left 26 dead soldiers, according to Syed Masood Kausar, governor of northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

So far 14 soldiers were wounded during the attack in the Mohmand Agency area, the death toll could rise since many of the injured soldiers are on critical condition. Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani called an emergency meeting with military chiefs to prepare the country’s response. The Defense Committee of the Cabinet will meet later Saturday.

NATO’s commander in Afghanistan, Marine General John R. Allen added his commitment to a thorough investigation. Cameron Munter, the U.S. Ambassador informed Pakistan that the United States will work closely to investigate the incident.

The incident on Pakistan soil damages the already strained relations with United States, now Pakistan has closed NATO’s supply routes into Afghanistan in response to the attack. (AV)
