Cassation Hearing Against El Universo Newspaper was Suspended

A challenge presented by the defense of El Universo newspaper was presented into the Second Division of Criminal Guarantees of the National Court of Justice delayed the cassation hearing scheduled for the upcoming January Friday 13th.
The request was presented last Friday January 6. Judge Luis Quiroz announced that today there would be talks with the president of the court Carlos Ramirez to decide who will be the judges that will handle the challenge. Ramirez also added that in 48 hours the names would be ready and that Gerardo Morales will be amongst them.
The use of the cassation against the sentence of El Universo directors was made due to libels that the Ecuadorian president Rafael Correa made regarding the article “No to the lies” written by the former opinion editor Emilio Palacio who is also being sued. (AV)
