UN Will Meet to Discuss Syria’s Future

Representatives of Western and Arab nations are gathering in New York to pressure a UN resolution on Syria, calling for President Bashar al-Assad resignation.

The UN Security Council accorded to meet on Tuesday (20:00 GMT) to discuss the draft resolution, which also calls for the government to immediately end the violence that has killed thousands in the past 10 months.

The document also states that there will not be any foreign military intervention in the conflict and demands. The resolution has the support of the majority, 10 of the Security Council’s 15 members, meaning that Russia or China would use their veto power to stop it since both nations have shown support for Assad.

The documents demand that al-Assad to surrender his full authority to his delegate and then to create a national unity government with free elections under Arab and international supervision. (AV)
