Heavy rains in Guayaquil cause floods

According to the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (INAMHI), the heavy rains that occurred last Saturday were the result of local heating caused by the solar intensity of the previous days.

After almost 12-hours of rain, several areas of the city were flooded, causing the death of two people, one drowned and another was electrocuted in the Daule avenue, and in the lower sector of Mount Sinai, also 23 houses collapsed.

According to the technicians, Guayaquil endured the precipitation of 160 millimetres of water, which coincided with the rise of the tide of the Salado estuary which aggravated the consequences of the event, according to Jaime Nebot, Mayor of Guayaquil, this prevented the normal operation of the sewer system.

They also emphasized that these events are common in the rainy season and therefore warned of the possibility that it may be repeated, sporadically, until the first or the next two weeks of May, the month in which is expected that the winter be over. However, one of the technicians said that to specify a date ‘is too complex‘.

Historical records of the  INAMHI report that in February of this year it rained less that in the same month in 2012.

Today is forecast cloudy skies with scattered rainfall, especially in the provinces of Esmeraldas, Los Rios, Manabi and Guayas.
