Archbishop Arregui rejects the distribution of the morning-after pill

During an interview with local media, Archbishop of Guayaquil, Antonio Arregui, reiterated his rejection of the government’s willingness to promote free access to emergency contraceptive pills (ECP) and statements made by President Rafael Correa in defense of this new provision.

“The Caesar (Correa) is not God, he cannot attribute himself with divine qualities, to enter in people’s consciousness to try to block it or mold it. The Caesar must protect those rights (to life) and promote them. That is how the Constitution understands it,” said Arregui.

Arregui expressed vehemently that the morning-after pill is abortive, following statements by Correa who claims that this tablet is a method endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the international entity defined as non abortive.

“When the approach (regulation) is to separate having sex from this responsibility and a possible pregnancy, we are generating a reckless youth, abandoned to their most primal impulses (…)” he noted.

The only contraceptive method accepted by the Catholic Church is the natural, the sequence of natural cycles in which the woman is fertile.

The archdiocese issued a statement to public officials, in which they “forbid to give reasons based on their faith (on the use of contraceptives). Is mayhem of a person’s expression …”
