Christian Benitez scoring champion in Mexico

The Ecuadorian Christian “Chucho” Benitez, striker of the America, set a record of three consecutive scoring titles in short Mexican soccer tournaments, and is now to be crowned as top scorer of the 2013 Clausura tournament with 12 goals.

In addition, the Panterita, as he is also known, equaled the record of Enrique Borja, a symbol of America, the first to achieve three straight titles of top scorer. Benitez added this title to those achieved in the Clausura 2012 with 11 goals, and in the Apertura 2012 with 14.

The last player to win three scoring titles was Mexico’s Carlos Hermosillo with Cruz Azul, between 1993 and 1996.

In the Clausura 2013, Benítez played as main scorer, the 17 games of the regular season and scored on eight dates. On two occasions, he scored three goals against Cruz Azul and against Pachuca. He also scored a goal per match against Jaguares, Atlante, Queretaro, Morelia, Leon and Pumas. Whenever Benitez scored, America did not lose. They won six games and tied two.
