In ‘Puerto Baquerizo Moreno’ wave caused damage to the pier.

Yesterday, the beaches of Galapagos, El Oro and Santa Elena, were affected by temporary flooding caused by waves of more than two metres in height (m).

Personnel of the Navy Oceanographic Institute (Inocar) said that the unusual magnitude of the swirl, is the product of a coincidence between a predicted wave movement and a period of spring tide.

“Winds create great waves, but in some areas it happens more strongly because of  seabed conditions, that causes waves of more height,” said Marco Santos, official of the Inocar.

The people mainly affected are the inhabitants of the San Cristobal Island; last Wednesday some ships failed to disembark commodities such as food, gas and cleaning supplies. “Large vessels do not reach the pier,so they are sending  barges for the trans-shipment of products to the pier, but yesterday they could not perform the landing,” said the official of the Captaincy of Puerto Baquerizo, Ernesto Escobar.

The director of Inocar, Juan Proano, said that the waves and the flood will last approximately until next Tuesday, and added that the maximum height of the waves will be 3.1 m and by the weekend they will decrease to 1.7 m.
