South American press associations warned against the Communications Act

South American press associations concerned by the Communications Law

This Thursday the South American media association reported, through a statement, their concern for the Communications Act that was approved in Ecuador last June 14 by the National Assembly.

The concern lies in the impact on the freedoms of expression, opinion and press.

“We alert, also, that setting unacceptable government controls through the creation of a Superintendency of Information and a Regulatory and Development Council of Information and Media, the political power installed a legal framework conducive to preemptive  censorship, such as a precedent of responsibilities whose consequences can be fatal or the free and independent exercise of journalism,” said the statement.

The associations “express our support to the Ecuadorian associations of journalists and media that predicted it and protest today for the undemocratic scopes of the Communications Law, and our commitment to remain alert to any action that directly or indirectly affects the freedoms of expression, of opinion and information in Ecuador and the South American region.”

Adepa (Association of Argentine journalistic entities), ANP (National Press Association of Bolivia), ANJ (Associação National Jornais), National Press Association of Chile, Andiarios from Colombia, and the Peruvian Press Council signed the statement that was broadcasted by several Ecuadorian media.
