The Ecuadorean Business Committee expressed its position on the Communications Act, which was recently approved by the National Assembly.

Among his arguments are “the wide range of discretionary powers conferred on institutions such as the Council Regulation and the Superintendency of Information, to authorize, monitor and punish the media, and the creation of a new fault-called media lynching that could make way for the formalization of prior censorship which would become vested regression.”

The committee noted that “for the business sector is essential to consolidate freedom of expression in Ecuador, because it is considered one of the pillars for the development and generation of welfare of citizens. It is worrying that in a country like ours open spaces for subjectivity in ensuring fundamental principles.”

The business sector expressed their contempt with the way in which the law was approved, on Friday June 14 in the Assembly. “It is regrettable and worrying that the draft was modified minutes before the vote, which discredits the due process in legislative debate.”
