Tababela Airport affected by strong winds

The strong winds (for up to 32 knots) in the area of Tababela between yesterday and the weekend, affected  20 aeronautical operations on Sunday,  causing a severe turbulence during the final approach phase in the landing and takeoff at the Quito airport.

The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (Inamhi) stated that August and the last days of this month are characterized by the presence of strong winds. Even more, in Tababela, thus being a Valley, wind circulates with force since there are no obstacles, such as buildings, and those gusts of wind hamper the movements of the aircrafts.

Studies indicate that the winds that dominate Tababela blow from North to South and only 4.1% comes from the East, this factor was considered for the orientation of the track for the landing of the planes.

That is why, according to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), strong winds are not a determining factor for the closure of the airport operations.
