Mayor Nebot rejects President Correa’s offer for reelection

Posted On 05 Aug 2013

The mayor of Guayaquil, Jaime Nebot, said this morning at a press conference that he expects President Correa to stop believing he is a “king” and starts acting as a Head of State, in response to Rafael Correa’s public announce about a pact that would allow indefinite reelection.

Nebot rejected the proposal stating that the people determine generational relays.

On Correa’s nation-wide broadcast, last Saturday from La Maná, Cotopaxi, the president launched the proposal: “I’m so agreeing with you Jaime that I propose to make a document that says:  it is the people who have the right to choose. We could sign it on Tuesday, I’ll go to Guayaquil, to the Municipality, we make the agreement and then we reform the Constitution for indefinitely reelection. Since you agree in the people being entitled to choose, then why limit the reelection … I propose that national agreement to you. ”

In response, Nebot ratified his opinion saying that is the people who must decide the continuity of its governors.

The mayor also said that the president’s statements are nothing but a smokescreen. He argued that the real intention of the Government is to stop Guayaquil port’s activity and said that in the coming hours he will give more details on his suspicion.
