The International Court of Justice of the UN decided to extend the sovereignty of the territorial sea of Peru, but without leaving Chile without all its maritime space.

In this way the Peruvians achieved a partial victory to draw a new frontier in the Pacific Ocean.

The judges kept the current division parallel to the coast only until 80 nautical miles. From there the line will be perpendicular to reach the end point. The final limit is straight to the south and has 200 miles marked.

Although the judgement does not set precise coordinates, the court expected them to be determined between Peru and Chile, said Peter Tomka, head of the Tribunal.

While Chilean experts in fisheries ensure that the 80 nautical miles which they have preserved are essential for catching anchovy, the representatives of the Chilean court  deeply regretted the decision.
